Airport Environs Planning & Regulation
Clarion Associates is one of the most experienced firms in the country on the subject of land use planning and growth management in the environs around major airports. Chris Duerksen, managing director of Clarion, developed an award-winning plan for growth and development on the private lands around Denver International Airport – one of the few new major commercial airports to be developed in the last three decades in the United States. Clarion produced the State of Minnesota’s airport land use compatibility planning manual and was part of a team that wrote the National Best Practices manual for the Transportation Research Board. We wrote model airport compatibility zoning code regulations for both manuals and model state enabling legislation for the national manual. We‘ve drafted airport land use compatibility plans for San Francisco International and San Diego International airports. Clarion has also worked with numerous other local governments, including Minneapolis, Pittsburgh, San Diego, and St. Louis and Will County, Illinois, advising them on airport environs growth-management strategies and intergovernmental planning issues.
The firm also has an established track record in related areas such as appraisal of airports and analysis of on-airport commercial development opportunities that are non-aviation related. Clarion has conducted major appraisals on several airports for purpose of sale or property disposition and was retained by the City of Chicago to evaluate claimed property value impacts of airport operations.
